Ordinary people were entertained on the streets, squares, in taverns, and
especially at fairs and folk festivals by "skomorokhs". Skomorokhs were
more than buffoons or clowns or fools (болвоны),
they had an aspect of the musician, singer, actor, comedian and performer
or acrobat. State officials did not like skomorokhs, as the state and its
corrupt officials were a natural satire of these sometimes political observers.
